Magical gears began the deep cut circle puzzle idea.  A patent was issued in the 80's and they were licensed at various times and produced as the Puzzler and then as Turnstiles for a  time.  The gear idea came years later and a patent on this has also been issued.  Many new designs are based on the this simple gear idea. A great thing about circle puzzles is that you see everything without turning it over,  it is flat but has many of the same properties of the cube and other twisty puzzles.  This makes it especially nice for teaching, writing about, illustrating and so forth.  Many other versions exist.
