Here is my idea for a cheap ride to space.  Use giant helium filled balloons with pullies attached and cables going around the pulleys down to motors that wind the cables around a drum very rapidly, causing the payload attached to the other end of the cables to rise rapidly, being released at a high altitude when a final boost rocket accelerates the payload to orbital speed.  For this to work it would have to boost speed from zero to around Mach 4 / Mach 10.  This would require the winding drums to achieve a very high rpm, probably very difficult to achieve.
